Facelift Q & A

What is a facelift?

A facelift is a surgical procedure that contours an aging face and tightens the skin to create a more youthful, rested appearance. Facelifts don’t alter the fundamentals of your look, but they do smooth lines and tighten up loose and sagging skin.

What types of issues can a facelift address?

You may choose a facelift when minimally invasive treatments no longer give you the anti-aging effects you desire. A facelift addresses a number of aesthetic issues including:

  • Jowls that develop in the cheeks and jawline
  • Loose or sagging skin in your neck or beneath your chin
  • Folds running from the sides of your nose to the corners of your mouth
  • Changes in the distribution of facial fat
  • Sagging facial skin

A facelift can’t stop the clock completely, but it can reverse some of its signs so you look more youthful.

What should I expect during a facelift?

Your facelift journey begins with a detailed consultation in the weeks prior to the procedure. Dr. Hopp meets with you to discuss your major concerns and explains how the surgery can help.

The procedure itself is performed while you’re under general anesthesia. Dr. Hopp makes incisions in areas such as the hairline at the temples and around the ear. You may also receive an incision under the chin to address sagging skin at the neck.

These incisions give Dr. Hopp access to lift and reposition skin and fat to give you a revamped look. Once your face’s fat and tissue is placed, Dr. Hopp redrapes your skin, removes any excess, and closes the incisions.

What is it like to recover from a facelift?

Expect to experience some bruising and swelling following a facelift. While much of this fades in just a few weeks, it may take several months for these side effects to resolve completely.

You’ll also notice that the skin on your face and neck feels tight, especially in the few days after the surgery. Sleep with your head elevated for the first few days and follow all postoperative care instructions for the quickest healing possible.

After you’ve completed the postoperative recovery process, you’ll look younger and more alert than before. You’ll get noticeable results, but you won’t look unnatural or unlike yourself.
