Breast Augmentation Q & A

Who is a candidate for breast augmentation?

You may wish to change the shape or size of your breasts if you have:

  • Asymmetry between the sides
  • Genetically small breasts
  • Breasts that have lost shape and fullness as a result of aging or breastfeeding
  • A desire for a curvier physique

Dr. Hopp works with you to determine the size, shape, and type of implant that works best for your aesthetic goals and your body type.

Candidates should be in generally good health and not smoke. Smoking can interfere with optimal healing.

What does breast augmentation involve?

With breast augmentation, you receive a saline or silicone implant placed behind the breast either in front of or behind the muscle. The exact position depends on your anatomy, type of implant, and the desired results.

The implant type also depends on your personal preference and cosmetic goals. Silicone implants give a very soft and natural look and feel. But if the implant ruptures, it leaks silicone and must be removed from your body right away.

Saline implants consist of a saline solution placed within a silicone shell. If these implants leak, your body absorbs the liquid without any incurring any harm.

Dr. Hopp most commonly places an incision along the base of each breast. Sometimes, the incision is placed just inside the edge of your areola.

In some cases, breast augmentation also includes a lift and repositioning.

What is recovery from breast augmentation like?

In the immediate recovery period, Dr. Hopp instructs you to wear a special bra to support your pectoral muscles as they heal. Recovery is relatively quick if you’re healthy going into breast augmentation surgery. If you have a sedentary job, plan on returning about one week following the procedure. More active jobs may require a longer break before you resume your tasks.

Vigorous activity is not recommended for about four weeks.
